About this piece
A reflection on disappointment, identity, and human connection, rooted in Cameroon’s diversity. This piece sees each person as a thread in the Commonwealth quilt—learning to navigate difference, let go of expectations, and find meaning in connection.
The Thread of Expectations
I come from Cameroon, a country where languages do not exist separately, but in constant dialogue. French, English, and local languages intertwine in everyday life like invisible threads connecting people, histories, and identities.
Growing up in this environment, I learned that human relationships are not simple equations. They are living spaces — fragile, complex, and often unpredictable.
And within these spaces, one emotion appears repeatedly: disappointment.
Not as a dramatic event, but as something silent that appears when expectations meet reality.
I often wonder whether disappointment is more present today, or whether it has always existed, only less expressed.
But the real question is not “why does disappointment exist?”, but “how do we live with it?”
Because every human being is different. We do not share the same expectations or limits.
In this sense, the challenge of human relationships is not to avoid disappointment, but to learn to coexist with difference.
I see my life as a thread in a larger fabric — the Commonwealth — where diversity is a strength.
Like a quilt made of many threads, each country, each culture, each person brings its own texture.
We are all threads trying to understand other threads.
Sometimes we break, sometimes we drift apart, sometimes we adapt.
Maybe connection is not perfection, but adaptation.
If my story is a thread in this global fabric, then it is a thread still learning.
And perhaps I am not just a thread in the fabric.
I am becoming its meaning.
