The Dupatta Archive: Stained with Unhealed History

About this piece
The dupatta as a living archive: where every thread maps our ancestral ruins, pain, and resilience. From mustard fields to the crimson scars of Partition, this work traces the embroidery of exploitation and the electric legacy we carry into the future.
A strand, the thinnest amongst the bunch, ends up becoming what is then called a thread. My stranded strand is not in the fields of daffodils, but is spread across the mustard waltzing in the meadows. From there, it descends to the earth and rumbles in it, carrying with it pieces of my subconscious existence; within it, the electricity of my genes powers future versions of me—the 'me' that is yet to come, when the idea of me does not even exist.
These strands collectively become a unique thread. It is a thread both known and unknown at the same time—a thread that has been woven against hard limestone that still bears the scars of an unfinished, unhealed history. Ultimately, it becomes a one-of-a-kind thread, spun into a one-of-a-kind fabric containing impressions and dyes that serve as a reminder of forgotten history.
This becomes the very dupatta that has borne the exploitation of the 'pine,' and reflects how the masters have shaped and imposed their impressions, conditioning them to change and stay in a particular way. This gives life to more such strands, carrying within them genes for more such future versions of me, or pieces of me, to form and be reminded of them each and every instance they cover their heads with similar yet different dupattas, carved from the same thread, bowing down to the same forms as the versions of my past.
