Written piece
Sun and Sea: Daybreak - Midday

About this piece
My poem Sun and Sea is divided into two parts: Daybreak and Midday. I wrote it whilst watching for hours at the games that the Sun plays on the clear sky of Cyprus. Sun and Sea are universal and people in every country can see and enjoy them despite diverse cultures.

SUN AND SEA (i)
DAYBREAK
As you gaze at the sky at daybreak
you will see some pastel colours
driving away the darkness
and enthrone themselves regally on the charriot
that pulls the Sun King.
The rose colour mingles with green
and slowly
their place is taken by the sky’s blue.
And in this kaleidoskope
overflowing with the colours of the rainbow
somewhere in the distant skyline
a point shines in gold
and the spiky rays appear through
like spears
piercing the light of day
to mellow with the yellow
of warmth and hope.
One ray succeeds the next
and they tangle like a shining wreath
until the body of the King,
round like a hubcap
is unveiled naked,
and with unhurried footsteps,
like in a procession,
it is enthroned in the abundant,
clear sky of my country.
SUN AND SEA (ii)
MIDDAY
And the wheel of the charriot
spins round and round,
the Sun King rises
step by step towards the clouds
and halts for a moment
to look idly
at the tiny weaklings
with the giant anxieties
moving on the tarmac,
covered with dust,
burning.
Ηe stopped brilliant,
beautiful,
abundant.
My brow is burning at midday.
The King has sat on his throne
scattering warmth on his subjects.
Around him, noises from the city
mingle with the seagulls’ twitterings
that have perched
on some rocks
among the waves
in front of the Catholic Church.
And the Sun with the Sea
have a personal chit chat
somewhere near the jetties.
