About this piece
A bittersweet ode to emigrating, perhaps by force and not choice. A love letter for a love that no longer works.
Forged from the love of liberty
My darling, I’m sorry I had to leave,
In the fires of hope and prayer
I can’t live like this anymore,
With boundless faith in our destiny
In another life, things are different.
We solemnly declare:
There, my children speak Trini
Side by side we stand
They play outside unafraid,
Islands of the blue Caribbean Sea,
They hear bamboo buss,
This our native land
And never run inside.
We pledge our lives to thee.
Bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh.
Here every creed and race find an equal place,
I miss you, I love you.
And may God bless our nation.
Until we are together again.
