About this piece
This is about a coming from a family of women who did things a different way and this one person from the generation choosing a different path as she becomes a mother and wants different fruits for her generations to come.
Cleaning out the Closet
I am grown now
In this village town
Shaped like a Cabaret On every round
Sometimes Silence is the best sound
For even though you cant measure the decibels
You can measure the waves
Time to unpack the closet
Filled with corset momma bought
To tie upon my waste, supporting the mountains whiskeyly restricting the guts
Because women like us must stay in place
Just like grandma's and the ones we can't trace
She said shut the door or place a chair
The unhinged piece of ply
But you can't move today
For tricky is the sky
So I ran outside to see what she did see
All I saw was a blue face looking down on me
But mama knows best, she is dangerous
She says in causes storms then blame it on you
Then becomes sunny and make us forget
Just like the women singing the blues in the cabaret
Inside all of us darkness dwell
Anyways you have that closet to clean
As you go on chasing big dreams
And throw away all those old dresses you kept for the sake
Of not wanting my gene(jean)
Some are too small you have them for a while(wild girl)
Or try some slacks
But these genes are safe for legs wide open
And they are coming back in style
You know mama,I can manage the weight(wait)
Thank you,you allowing me to pursue my dreams
For through emptying out the closet
I will lose some parts of me
That could clog my heart
And kill me
