ANOTHER ANGEL

About this piece
These are brief poetic lines about my receiving a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship to study for a PHD in Philosophy, with a concentration on philosophy of education, at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
I returned to Jamaica in 1981 and taught here to retirement.
Ann, another angel bringing me good news from the staff-mail, during a coffee break;
mine, a manila envelope with the offer of a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship
to study education with its built-in idea of goodness,
and as an arm of re-making societies like my own,
and seeing this new college were were making
like an hoe in the yam-field of our becoming.
And I was off to a scenic campus
beside a sea and hills like those of my homeland,
to contemplate the world I had left behind,
and wonder what it might look like
through the eyes of the philosophers of the past,
and. those who might come someday
from the cane-fields I have known.
