How we are helping

We are supporting BIRTH Fiji to improve client care systems and train staff in best practice methods, while strengthening national advocacy and fostering government partnerships to advance community-based mental health care.

About the project

The Foundation’s capacity-strengthening grants stream supports smaller Commonwealth civil society organisations in smaller Member States, building their expertise and enhancing their capacity to influence policy.

BIRTH Fiji provides community-based mental health services and is striving to become a sustainable and influential player in Fiji’s mental health sector. With support from the Foundation, BIRTH Fiji will develop a case management and advocacy programme, strengthen staff skills, and increase its capacity to shape national mental health priorities.

The key actions for this project are:

  • Case management improvement
    • Evaluating current systems through a ‘process mapping’ workshop.
    • Revising the client intake process and updating case management tools.
    • Training staff on new recovery-based tools and methods.
    • Documenting all client care processes and updating the data capture system.
    • Migrating client data to a digital management system.
  • Monitoring and evaluation
    • Conducting ongoing project monitoring, evaluation and learning activities.
  • Advocacy and partnership development
    • Building relationships with government ministries and mental health stakeholders.
    • Convening mental health agencies and coordinating advocacy approaches

As a result of the project, it is hoped that BIRTH Fiji will deliver higher quality care through more consistent and client-centred services. Staff will be better equipped to support mental health recovery, and the organisation will be better positioned to share insights with government and policy actors. Stronger advocacy will raise the profile of community-based mental healthcare and influence national mental health policy and funding. BIRTH Fiji will also deepen its partnerships, boosting its sustainability and long-term impact.
